Biography
Ennio Guarnieri (12 October 1930 – 1 July 2019) was an Italian cinematographer. Born in Rome, he abandoned his studies and worked as an assistant cinematographer to Anchise Brizzi from 1949 to 1956, later serving as assistant camera on Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960). He made his debut as director of photography in 1962 with Elio Petri’s I giorni contati.
Guarnieri became a frequent collaborator with directors including Mauro Bolognini, Franco Zeffirelli and Vittorio De Sica. He photographed The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970) for De Sica, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Cinematography. His work with Zeffirelli included Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972) and La Traviata (1982), for each of which he received a Nastro d’Argento for best cinematography. From the 1980s he increasingly worked in television and advertising.
