Biography
Ercan Kesal is a Turkish actor, scriptwriter, director and physician. He graduated from Ege University medical school in 1984 and worked as a physician before entering film in 2002 with a role in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Distant.
He has collaborated frequently with Ceylan, acting in Three Monkeys (2008) and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011), for which he also co-wrote the screenplay. The latter received a nomination for Best Screenplay at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Other notable acting roles include Vavien (2009), Butterflies (2018) and the television series The Pit (2017). He has also directed and written several films and published books.
Kesal has received acting awards including Best Actor at the Golden Boll Film Festival and the Istanbul Film Festival for Yozgat Blues (2013). He has been married to actress Nazan Kesal since 2005.
