Biography
Ermanno Olmi was an Italian film director, screenwriter, editor and cinematographer. He began his career making documentaries for the Edison-Volta electricity company from the early 1950s and directed his first feature, Il tempo si è fermato, in 1959.
Olmi's best-known works include Il Posto (1961) and The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978), the latter of which he also wrote, edited and shot; it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Later films include The Legend of the Holy Drinker (1988) and The Profession of Arms (2001). He died on 7 May 2018.
