Biography
Erwin Hillier (also credited as Erwin Hiller) was a cinematographer. Born in Berlin in 1911 to an Anglo-German family, he studied art briefly in Berlin before beginning his film career at UFA studios. He worked as a camera assistant on Fritz Lang's M (1931) and emigrated to Britain in 1933, where he joined the camera department at Gaumont British.
Hillier became a director of photography in the early 1940s. He shot A Canterbury Tale (1944) and I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) for Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. He collaborated frequently with director Michael Anderson on films including The Dam Busters (1955), Operation Crossbow (1965), The Quiller Memorandum (1966) and The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968). He retired after The Valley of Gwangi (1969) and died in London in 2005.
