Biography
Francesco Callari was an Italian actor, theatre and film critic, and essayist. Born in Palermo, he began his career writing theatre criticism for Scenario and Il dramma, and film criticism for Cine-Magazzino (under the pseudonym Francàl), Il Tevere and Film.
He served on the 1946 commission of journalists that replaced the jury at the Venice International Film Festival and contributed to other publications including Cinema and Bianco e Nero. Callari is noted for his scholarship on Luigi Pirandello, culminating in the 1991 book Pirandello e il cinema, which won the Premio Pirandello.
In 1992 he donated his theatre and film archive to the Biblioteca Teatrale of the SIAE. He appeared in two films directed by Francesco Rosi: as Judge Sanza in Illustrious Corpses (1976) and as Dottore Gibilisco in Christ Stopped at Eboli (1979). Callari died in 1996.
