Biography
François Dompierre is a Canadian composer, conductor and songwriter. Born in Ottawa in 1943, he studied piano, organ and composition at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal after earlier training in Ottawa.
He began his career writing and performing songs before turning principally to film and television scores. Dompierre has composed music for more than sixty productions, including several directed by Denys Arcand: The Decline of the American Empire (1986) and Jesus of Montreal (1989). Other notable scores include Mario (1984), Le Matou (1985) and The Passion of Augustine (2015). He has also worked extensively as an orchestrator and conductor with artists such as Pauline Julien and Félix Leclerc, and has written concert works performed by major Canadian orchestras.
Dompierre has received three Genie Awards for film music, two Félix Awards and the Grand Prix de la SOCAN. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014.
