Biography
François Girard is a Canadian film director and screenwriter. Born on 12 January 1963 in Saint-Félicien, Quebec, he began his career in the Montreal art video scene in the mid-1980s, founding Zone Productions and working on experimental films, music videos and installations. His first feature film was Cargo (1990).
He attained international recognition with Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993), which he directed and co-wrote with Don McKellar. Subsequent features include The Red Violin (1998), Silk (2007), Boychoir (2015) and The Song of Names (2019). The Red Violin won an Academy Award for Best Original Score along with multiple Genie Awards.
Girard has also directed opera and theatre productions, including works by Stravinsky and Wagner, as well as shows for Cirque du Soleil. His television credits include the Peter Gabriel concert film Secret World Live, for which he received a Grammy Award.
