Biography
François Leterrier (26 May 1929 – 4 December 2020) was a French film director, screenwriter and actor. He studied philosophy at the University of Paris and performed military service in Morocco, where he was cast by Robert Bresson in the leading role of Lieutenant Fontaine in the 1956 film A Man Escaped.
After appearing in that film, Leterrier worked as an assistant director to Louis Malle, Étienne Périer and Yves Allégret. His directorial debut was Les Mauvais Coups (1961), adapted from a novel by Roger Vailland. He subsequently directed adaptations of works by Jean Giono and others, as well as films including Goodbye Emmanuelle (1977).
Leterrier was the father of film director Louis Leterrier.
