Biography
František Pavlíček (also credited as Frantisek Pavlicek) was a Czech screenwriter and dramatist. Born on 20 November 1923 in Lukov, he studied Slavonic studies and aesthetics at Charles University in Prague. He worked as an editor for Czechoslovak Radio and as a dramaturg and screenwriter at the Barrandov film studios, later serving as artistic director of the Divadlo na Vinohradech theatre from 1965.
Pavlíček co-wrote the screenplay for František Vláčil’s Marketa Lazarová (1967), an adaptation of Vladislav Vančura’s novel that took several years to develop and is widely regarded as a landmark of Czech cinema. He also wrote the screenplay for the popular fairy-tale film Three Wishes for Cinderella (1973), often under pseudonyms such as Bohumila Zelenková. Other credits include Horoucí srdce (1962) and Tony, tobě přeskočilo (1969).
After signing Charter 77 and his involvement in the events of 1968, Pavlíček was banned from cultural work and took manual jobs until 1989. He later returned to public roles, including as director of Czechoslovak Radio. He died on 29 September 2004 in Prague.
