Biography
Fred Griffiths (born Frederick David Griffiths) was an English actor. A former London taxi driver and member of the Auxiliary Fire Service during the Second World War, he was discovered by director Humphrey Jennings and cast as Johnny Daniels (uncredited) in the 1943 documentary-drama Fires Were Started.
He went on to appear in more than 150 films and numerous television productions between 1943 and the late 1970s, often in supporting or bit-part roles. Notable credits include Passport to Pimlico (1949), The Cruel Sea (1953), I'm All Right Jack (1959), The Ladykillers (1955), To Sir, with Love (1967) and Dad's Army (1971). He frequently played taxi drivers and other working-class characters.
Griffiths was married to Emily Sadler from 1934 until her death in 1982; they had one son. He died in London on 27 August 1994.
