Biography
Fred McLeod Wilcox was an American film director who worked primarily for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He began his career in the studio's publicity department in the late 1920s and advanced to assistant director before making his feature debut with Lassie Come Home (1943).
Wilcox directed several family films at MGM, including Courage of Lassie (1946), Hills of Home (1948) and The Secret Garden (1949). He is best known for the science-fiction film Forbidden Planet (1956). After leaving MGM in 1957 he directed, produced and co-wrote the independent drama I Passed for White (1960).
Wilcox was born in Tazewell, Virginia, on 22 December 1907 and died in Beverly Hills, California, on 23 September 1964.
