Biography
Frederick Wiseman is an American filmmaker and documentarian. He produced the narrative feature The Cool World (1963), directed by Shirley Clarke. He went on to direct, produce, edit and write High School (1968), an observational documentary shot at a Philadelphia high school.
Wiseman was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1930 and died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2026. Educated at Williams College and Yale Law School, he trained as a lawyer before turning to film. His documentaries examine American institutions without narration or music, often through extended observation and thematic editing. Among his best-known works are Titicut Follies (1967), Hospital (1970) and Ex Libris: The New York Public Library (2017). He founded the distribution company Zipporah Films and received an honorary Academy Award in 2016.
