Biography
Friedrich Gorenstein (also credited as Fridrikh Gorenshteyn) was a Soviet and German Russian-language author and screenwriter. Born on 18 March 1932 in Kiev, he studied mining in Dnipropetrovsk and worked as a miner and mining engineer before moving to Moscow in 1962 to complete a scenarist course at the State Film University.
He wrote numerous screenplays, most notably co-authoring the script for Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972). Other credits include The Slave of Love (1976, directed by Nikita Mikhalkov). In the Soviet Union only one prose work was published during his lifetime, the autobiographical novella The House with the Tower (1964).
Gorenstein emigrated to West Germany in 1980 and continued writing in Berlin until his death on 2 March 2002. His works often explored themes of Stalinism and antisemitism.
