Biography
Fujiko Yamamoto (山本富士子) is a Japanese stage, film and television actress. She was born on 11 December 1931 in Nishi ward, Osaka. In 1950 she won the first Miss Nippon Grand Prix, and made her film debut in 1953 at Daiei Film, where she became one of the studio's leading actresses.
She appeared in more than 100 films between 1953 and 1963, including Equinox Flower (1958) directed by Yasujirō Ozu and An Actor's Revenge (1963) directed by Kon Ichikawa, in which she played Ohatsu. Yamamoto also worked with directors such as Shirō Toyoda and Kōzaburō Yoshimura. She received the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actress in 1959 and the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Actress in 1961.
In 1963, following a contract dispute with Daiei head Masaichi Nagata, she was dismissed from the studio and prevented from working at other film companies under the Five-Company Agreement. She has not appeared in any further films, but has continued to work in television, including the series Toshiba Sunday Theatre, and on stage.
