Biography
Gábor Medvigy was a Hungarian cinematographer. Born in Budapest in 1957, he trained at the Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskola, graduating in 1986 from Lajos Koltai’s class. He began working in film after passing his photographer’s examination in 1979 and joining Mafilm.
Medvigy is known for his work with director Béla Tarr on Damnation (1988), Satantango (1994) and Werckmeister Harmonies (2000). He also photographed films by Zoltán Kamondi, Attila Janisch, Károly Makk and András Jeles. He was a founder of the Hungarian Society of Cinematographers and received the Balázs Béla Prize in 1992, the Hungarian Film Critics’ Prize on four occasions, and the title of Meritorious Artist in 2009. In later years he taught at the Budapest Metropolitan University and other institutions. He died in 2023.
