Gang Dong-won has built much of his career in action and fantasy, but his quieter acting deserves attention. In Broker, we like the way he gives Song Kang-ho room without disappearing beside him.

Song Kang-ho is the more expansive presence in Broker (2022); Gang Dong-won gives him someone quieter to play against. As Dong-soo, he lets Song’s Sang-hyun supply much of the humour and warmth without trying to match him. We laughed, then felt uneasy about laughing, because Song makes a baby broker someone we are pleased to spend time with. Gang’s restraint helps that awkward company feel plausible, and it is a good reason to take him seriously beyond the action roles.
His breakthrough in Temptation of Wolves (2004) came with a heartthrob image that initially narrowed perceptions of what he could do. Much of the subsequent career has involved physical demands: fantasy in Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard (2009), and action in Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014) and Peninsula (2020). Swordsmanship and martial arts training are recurring requirements, and his preparation has included months of sword practice. That work deserves recognition even when the quieter performances are the ones that interest us more.
The danger with this sort of quiet acting is that it can leave the other performer doing all the work. In Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Broker, we do not find that: Gang supplies enough of a presence for Song’s warmth to seem directed at someone, rather than offered to the audience. That does not settle our doubts about a crowded plot which occasionally pleads for sympathy. The two actors help us stay with it, but cannot make every development convincing.
Nor does Broker mark a permanent departure from action: in Uprising (2024), he plays Cheon-young in a period setting. We would welcome more roles that ask for the economy he brings to Dong-soo alongside those requiring long physical preparation. Biography
Gang Dong-won is a South Korean actor. Born on 18 January 1981 in Busan, he studied mechanical engineering at Hanyang University before beginning his career as a model.
He transitioned to acting in the early 2000s and has appeared in films including Woochi: The Demon Slayer (2009), Secret Reunion (2010), Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014), The Priests (2015), 1987: When the Day Comes (2017), Illang: The Wolf Brigade (2018), Peninsula (2020) and Broker (2022), in which he played Dong-soo.
