Biography
Garrett Elsden Fort (5 June 1900 – 26 October 1945) was an American screenwriter, playwright and short story writer. Born in New York City, he began his career in the silent era as a gateman at Famous Players and later wrote under contract for Cecil B. DeMille and Paramount Pictures.
He contributed to numerous 1930s horror films, including the screenplays for Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Dracula's Daughter (1936) and The Devil-Doll (1936). Other credits include adaptations for The Lost Patrol (1934), The Mark of Zorro (1940) and Blood on the Sun (1945).
A follower of the Indian spiritual master Meher Baba, Fort travelled to India in 1937 while working on a screenplay based on Baba's philosophy. He died in a Hollywood hotel room from an overdose of sleeping pills.
