Biography
Gary Mackay is a New Zealand production designer and art director. Based in Auckland, he has worked in film and television for more than twenty-five years, designing over twenty feature films and television dramas as well as numerous commercials and international events.
His production design credits include Balls Up (2026), Ricky Stanicky (2024), A Mistake (2024), Haunting of the Queen Mary (2023), No Exit (2022), Shadow in the Cloud (2021) and the Netflix series Cowboy Bebop (2021). He served as supervising art director on Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and The Luminaries (2020).
Mackay has received several awards, including New Zealand Television Awards for best production design on Cowboy Bebop and The Luminaries, and an Art Directors Guild Award for Crazy Rich Asians. He is also an artist and sculptor, and has been a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards and the National Contemporary Art Awards.
