Biography
George Antheil was an American composer. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he studied piano and composition in Philadelphia and New York before moving to Europe in the early 1920s, where he became known for modernist and avant-garde works such as Ballet Mécanique (1924).
He returned to the United States in the 1930s and composed scores for numerous films, including Make Way for Tomorrow (1937), Knock on Any Door (1949), In a Lonely Place (1950) and House by the River (1950). His later style incorporated more tonal and American influences. Antheil also wrote an autobiography, Bad Boy of Music (1945), and collaborated with Hedy Lamarr on a frequency-hopping radio guidance system patented in 1942.
