Biography
George Beranger (also credited as André Beranger, George A. Beranger and other variants) was an Australian actor who appeared in more than 140 films between 1913 and 1950, as well as directing and writing for the screen.
Born George Augustus Beringer in Enmore, New South Wales, he began acting in Shakespearean roles at the age of sixteen with the Walter Bentley Players before emigrating to the United States in 1912. He worked in Hollywood silent films, appearing in D. W. Griffith productions including The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl (1919), and films by Ernst Lubitsch. He directed sixteen films between 1914 and 1924.
Following the advent of sound films his roles became smaller and often uncredited. He later supplemented his income as a draftsman for the Los Angeles City Council and lived in Laguna Beach, California, where he died in 1973.
