Biography
George Mathews (10 October 1911 – 7 November 1984) was an American actor. He began his stage career in the early 1930s after failing to secure a job with the US Post Office and went on to appear in numerous Broadway productions, including roles in The Eve of St. Mark and A Streetcar Named Desire.
On screen he was frequently cast as heavies or tough military types. His film credits include Williams in The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), John Shanssey in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), Spec Cauley in Pat and Mike (1952) and Sheriff Bull Harper in The Last Wagon (1956). He also appeared in television series such as The Honeymooners, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Perry Mason.
Mathews was married to stage actress Mary Haynsworth from 1951 until his death.
