Biography
George Merritt (10 December 1890 – 27 August 1977) was an English character actor. He appeared in numerous films and television productions, often in authority roles, and was also prolific on the London stage.
Born in London, he began acting at nineteen and studied drama in Germany. At the outbreak of the First World War he was interned as a civilian prisoner at Ruhleben camp, where he took part in over fifty plays. He entered films in 1931 and worked steadily through the 1970s.
His credits include Young and Innocent (1937), A Canterbury Tale (1944), Quatermass 2 (1957), Dracula (1958) as a policeman, The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961), Battle of Britain (1969) and Cromwell (1970), as well as television appearances in The Avengers, The Prisoner and The Persuaders!.
