Biography
Giancarlo Bartolini Salimbeni (also credited as Giancarlo Salimbeni or G. C. Bartolini Salimbeni) was an Italian costume designer, production designer and art director. Born in Florence on 4 November 1916, he died in Rome on 17 January 2000.
He studied law in Florence before working as an illustrator and in university theatre. From the 1950s he worked in film, often on peplum, adventure and historical productions, and collaborated repeatedly with directors including Vittorio De Sica, Valerio Zurlini and Luigi Capuano.
Bartolini Salimbeni is credited with both costume design and production design on The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970), for which he received the Nastro d’Argento for best production design in 1971. Other notable credits include costume design on The Desert of the Tartars (1976), Totò e Cleopatra (1963), Totò versus Maciste (1962), Hannibal (1959) and Sodom and Gomorrah (1962).
