Biography

Gillies MacKinnon (also credited as Gillies Mackinnon) is a Scottish film and television director, writer and painter. He was born on 8 January 1948 in Glasgow and studied mural painting at Glasgow School of Art. He later trained at Middlesex Polytechnic and the National Film and Television School, where his graduation short Passing Glory (1986) won the first Scottish Film Prize at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

MacKinnon began directing for television with films including Needle (1990) and The Grass Arena (1991). His feature films include The Playboys (1992), A Simple Twist of Fate (1994), Small Faces (1996, which he co-wrote), Regeneration (1997) and Hideous Kinky (1998). He has also directed episodes of series such as The Village (2013) and later features including Whisky Galore! (2016) and The Last Bus (2021).
