Biography
Grant Withers, born Granville Gustavus Withers, was an American film actor. He began working in motion pictures near the end of the silent era and moved into sound films, initially taking leading roles before his parts diminished to supporting roles, often as villains in B-movies, serials and Westerns.
Withers held a ten-year contract at Republic Pictures from 1944 to 1954. His friendships with John Ford and John Wayne led to appearances in nine of Wayne's films, including My Darling Clementine (1946) as Ike Clanton, Fort Apache (1948) as Silas Meacham and Rio Grande (1950) as a U.S. Deputy Marshal. He also worked in television, with roles in series such as Perry Mason and Gunsmoke.
In 1930 he eloped with actress Loretta Young; the marriage was annulled the following year. Withers died in North Hollywood, California, in 1959.
