Biography
Günter Grass was a German writer, poet, playwright and artist. Born in the Free City of Danzig in 1927, he served in the military during the Second World War and later studied art before publishing his first novel, The Tin Drum, in 1959. The book formed part of his Danzig Trilogy and was adapted into a 1979 film.
Grass received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999. He appeared as himself in the 1988 documentary Hôtel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie, directed by Marcel Ophüls. He died in Lübeck in 2015.
