Biography
György Barkó was a Romanian-Hungarian actor. Born in Purcăreni, Romania, he trained at the István Szentgyörgyi Theatre Institute in Cluj and became a member of the Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj-Napoca from 1954 until 1989.
He resettled in Hungary in 1989 and joined the Pécs National Theatre. Barkó appeared in numerous films, including Béla Tarr’s Satantango (1994) as the school director (Iskolaigazgató), Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) as Mr. Nadabán, and In July (2000). He received the Pécs City Arts Award in 2006 and the Hilda Gobbi Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
