Biography
Hala Matar is a Bahraini-American director, writer and producer based in Los Angeles. Her feature directorial debut, the thriller Electra (2024), which she also co-wrote and co-produced, premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and received a US theatrical release in 2025. She is the first Bahraini woman to direct a feature film.
Matar previously directed short films including Streetcar (2013) and L'Ariel (2018), as well as music videos and fashion films for brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Vivienne Westwood. She studied theatre before taking a cinematography class at the University of Virginia that led her into filmmaking.
