Halil Ergün plays a man's place in the world before he plays his feelings, and in Yol that restraint is the point: shame with no appeal for sympathy. Fifty years of ordinary husbands and fathers have followed, and the plainness has held.

Watch what Ergün does when Mehmet Salih arrives at his wife's family's door in Yol (1982) and is told he is not welcome. He does not plead and he does not rage. He stands there taking it, a man who has done something and knows the bill has come, and Ergün lets the humiliation sit on him without once turning to the camera for a pardon. We found it the hardest of the film's five strands to watch, because he gives us nothing to soften it. Meral Orhonsay's Emine does the wanting in those scenes; Ergün does the standing.
That is the habit, and it comes from the stage. He began in theatre in the early 1970s, having left a political science degree at Ankara University unfinished, and he has said that he builds a character from his class and his moment in history rather than from what he is feeling. Cinema came in 1975 with İzin, written by Yılmaz Güney, and then Maden (1978). Yol, written by Güney in prison and directed for him by Şerif Gören, was banned in Turkey for years and seen abroad first, and it is the film that made him a film actor. Dozens of features followed through the 1980s and 1990s, among them Böcek (1995) and Mum Kokulu Kadınlar (1996), several of them with Şerif Sezer opposite him.
Ferzan Özpetek's Hamam (1997) took him to a different audience, as Osman, the warm and hospitable man looking after an inherited bathhouse. It shows the other side of the coin. An actor who plays position before feeling is good at hospitality, at the small courtesies of a host, and the risk is that he ends up more likeable than the people the film is about. The men at the centre of Hamam are cooler than the man showing them round. Then television: Yaprak Dökümü (2006–2010), five seasons as the father Ali Rıza Bey, which made him far better known at home than any of the films had. He has kept working; Dedemin Gözyaşları came out in 2024.
The limitation is the flip side of the virtue. Because he does not display, he can go quiet in a crowded film, and Mehmet Salih is one of the shorter strands of Yol, not the one most people remember first. Ergün said of Güney in 2023, "Sel gider kumu kalır, Yılmaz Güney de sineması da hep olacak": the flood passes and the sand stays. It applies to him as well. Start with Yol, where he is at his plainest, and notice how little he needs to do at that door.
Biography
Halil Ergün is a Turkish stage, film and television actor. Born on 8 September 1946 in İznik, he studied political science at Ankara University and began his theatre career in Bursa before making his cinema debut in 1975 with İzin, written by Yılmaz Güney.
He is known for his role as Mehmet Salih in Yol (The Road, 1982) and as Osman in Steam: The Turkish Bath (Hamam, 1997). Ergün has appeared in more than eighty theatre and screen roles, including the long-running television series Yaprak Dökümü (Falling Leaves, 2006–2010) as Ali Rıza Bey. He has received Best Actor awards at the Golden Orange and Adana Golden Boll festivals, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the Golden Orange Film Festival in 2007.
