Biography
Harold Budd was an American composer and pianist. Born in Los Angeles in 1936 and raised in the Mojave Desert, he studied music at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1966. He became known for minimalist and ambient works, developing a signature 'soft pedal' piano technique characterised by slow playing and sustained resonance.
Budd contributed original music to the films Mysterious Skin (2005) and White Bird in a Blizzard (2014), both in collaboration with Robin Guthrie. He composed the score for the HBO series I Know This Much Is True (2020), marking his television scoring debut. He also collaborated extensively with Brian Eno and others. Budd died in Arcadia, California, in December 2020.
