Biography
Henri Bendel (1868–1936) was an American fashion designer and retailer who founded Henri Bendel, Inc., an upscale women's clothing company in New York City. He began his career as a milliner and opened a shop in Greenwich Village in the mid-1890s. The business expanded into custom dresses and imported Parisian fashions.
Bendel established a store at 10 West 57th Street in 1913. He received a costume design credit on the 1920 film Way Down East (uncredited) and worked on Gloria's Romance (1916).
