Biography
Henri La Barthe was a French journalist, private detective and writer of crime novels and screenplays. He founded the magazine Détective in the 1920s and later sold the title to Gallimard. Writing under the pseudonym Détective Ashelbé (or variants such as Julien Ashelbé), he published the novel Pépé le Moko in 1931.
La Barthe contributed to the screenplay of Julien Duvivier’s 1937 film adaptation of his novel, which starred Jean Gabin. He also wrote the novel Dédée d’Anvers (1939), later adapted for the screen, and other works including Le Club des aristocrates and additional screenplays. He was the grandfather of the singer and writer Thierry Tuborg.
