Biography
Herbert Rudley (also credited as Herb Rudley) was an American character actor who appeared in stage productions, films and on television. Born in Philadelphia, he attended Temple University before winning a scholarship to Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre. He made his stage debut in 1926 and his Broadway debut in 1931 in Did I Say No, later appearing in productions including Macbeth (as Macduff), Abe Lincoln in Illinois and The Threepenny Opera.
Rudley recreated his stage role in the 1940 film version of Abe Lincoln in Illinois. Over the following decades he took supporting parts in films such as The Seventh Cross (1944), Rhapsody in Blue (1945, as Ira Gershwin), Artists and Models (1955), The Court Jester (1955), The Young Lions (1958) and The Bravados (1958). On television he had a regular role as Herb Hubbard in The Mothers-in-Law (1967–1969) and guest appearances in series including Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, The Beverly Hillbillies and Dallas (1981). He died in Los Angeles in 2006.
