Biography
Herbert S. Terrace is a professor of psychology and psychiatry at Columbia University. His research has focused on behaviourism, animal cognition and the evolution of language. In the 1970s he directed Project Nim, an experiment that attempted to teach American Sign Language to a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky.
Terrace appears as himself in the 2011 documentary film Project Nim. He is the author of Nim: A Chimpanzee Who Learned Sign Language (1979) and Why Chimpanzees Can't Learn Language and Only Humans Can (2019). Terrace was born on 29 November 1936 in Brooklyn, New York.
