Biography

Hugh Webster (1927–1986) was a Scottish-born Canadian actor who worked in theatre, television and film. Born in Edinburgh, he studied art in England before moving with his family to Canada in 1948. He studied drama in Toronto and later formed his own theatre company in Oakville, Ontario. He appeared regularly in early Canadian television, including CBC anthology dramas, and toured with Canadian Players.

Webster's film roles included Shorty in King of the Grizzlies (1970), parts in Fortune and Men's Eyes (1971) and Between Friends (1973), and the Drunk in Never Cry Wolf (1983). He and Ed McNamara shared the Canadian Film Award for Best Actor in a Non-Feature for their performances in the 1975 short For Gentlemen Only.

He was married to actress Jan Campbell from 1952. Webster died of cancer in Owen Sound, Ontario, on 31 May 1986.
