Biography
Hugo van Lawick (also credited as Baron Hugo Van Lawick) was a Dutch wildlife filmmaker, cinematographer and director. Born in Surabaya, Indonesia, he worked extensively for National Geographic, filming chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania during the 1960s and producing documentaries on Serengeti wildlife including wild dogs, elephants and lions.
He directed films such as People of the Forest: The Chimps of Gombe (1988), The Leopard Son (1996) and Serengeti Symphony (1998). Van Lawick was married to primatologist Jane Goodall from 1964 to 1974; they had one son. He appears in archive footage in the 2017 documentary Jane.
