Biography
Iain Declan Softley is an English film director, producer and screenwriter. He was educated at St Benedict's School, Ealing, and Queens' College, Cambridge, where he directed theatrical productions. He worked for Granada Television and the BBC in the 1980s before directing music videos and moving into feature films.
Softley's debut feature Backbeat (1994), which he wrote and directed, opened the Sundance Film Festival and received a BAFTA nomination for Best British Film. Subsequent films include Hackers (1995), The Wings of the Dove (1997), K-PAX (2001), The Skeleton Key (2005) and Inkheart (2008). He has also directed the television adaptation The Outcast (2015) and the short film The Shepherd (2023).
