Biography
Ian Baker is an Australian cinematographer. Born in Melbourne in 1947, he studied sculpture and painting at Fine Art School and Swinburne College of Advanced Education (now the Victorian College of the Arts). He began his career in advertising, working on television commercials, and in 1976 established his own production company in Melbourne.
Baker’s feature film work began in the late 1970s. He has collaborated extensively with director Fred Schepisi, serving as cinematographer on films including The Devil’s Playground (1976), The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978), Roxanne (1987), The Russia House (1990), Six Degrees of Separation (1993), Fierce Creatures (1997), Queen of the Damned (2002) and Evan Almighty (2007). He has also worked on The Punisher (1989), I.Q. (1994), The Chamber (1996) and Words and Pictures (2014).
Baker won the Australian Film Institute Award for best cinematography for The Devil’s Playground and received further AFI recognition for The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith and Japanese Story (2003).
