Biography
Ida Kamińska was a Polish actress and theatre director. Born on 4 September 1899 in Odessa in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine), she was the daughter of Yiddish stage actors Ester Rachel Kamińska and Abraham Izaak Kamiński.
She began performing on stage as a child and later founded and directed her own theatre companies. Kamińska managed the Jewish State Theater of Poland from 1945 until 1968. She is known for her leading role as Rozália Lautmannová in the Czechoslovak film The Shop on Main Street (1965), directed by Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Kamińska immigrated to the United States in 1968. She died in New York City on 21 May 1980.
