Biography
Igor Luther was a Slovak cinematographer. Born on 5 August 1942 in Banská Bystrica, he trained at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague and began working as a director of photography in 1967.
He was part of the Czechoslovak New Wave, collaborating with directors such as Juraj Jakubisko and Alain Robbe-Grillet. After emigrating to West Germany in 1968, he became a leading cinematographer of the New German Cinema, working frequently with Volker Schlöndorff on films including The Tin Drum (1979) and The Handmaid's Tale (1990), as well as with Andrzej Wajda on Danton (1983).
Luther received two German Film Awards for best cinematography and the Goldene Kamera. In 2020 he was awarded the Pribina Cross, First Class, for his contributions to Slovak cinema. He died on 7 June 2020 in Rijeka, Croatia.
