Biography
Jack Asher (29 March 1916 – April 1991) was an English cinematographer. Born in London, he began his career as a camera operator and made his debut as director of photography on The Magic Bow (1946).
He is best known for his work with Hammer Film Productions, serving as director of photography on several of their colour Gothic horror films, including The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dracula (1958), The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959), The Mummy (1959), The Man Who Could Cheat Death (1959), The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960) and The Brides of Dracula (1960). He also worked on monochrome thrillers such as The Camp on Blood Island (1958) and non-Hammer productions including Reach for the Sky (1956).
His brother Robert Asher was a film and television director with whom he collaborated. Asher received a BAFTA nomination for Best British Cinematography (Colour) for The Scarlet Blade (1963).
