Biography
Jack Barty (born John Walter Bartholomew) was an English variety comedian and film actor. He made his first stage appearance in 1907 as part of a double act. After serving in the First World War, he resumed his career, billed as 'The Burly Burlesquer', and became known for his performances in the 1922 revue Our Liz. He toured South Africa, Australia and the United States before returning to London in the early 1930s.
Barty was an early member of the Crazy Gang and appeared with them at the 1933 Royal Variety Performance. He had a film career in British productions during the 1930s, including roles in Oliver the Eighth (1934) as Jitters the butler and Gaslight (1940) as the Chairman of the Music Hall. He also contributed uncredited gag writing to Laurel and Hardy films such as Sons of the Desert (1933) and Oliver the Eighth (1934). He was a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats and died in Streatham, London, in 1942.
