Biography
Jack Couffer was an American cinematographer, director and producer. Born in Upland, California, he studied at the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television after serving as a combat photographer in the Second World War. He specialised in nature and wildlife films, working for more than a decade at Walt Disney Studios on the True-Life Adventures series in roles that included cinematographer, writer, director and producer.
Couffer received an Academy Award nomination for best cinematography for Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1973). He produced Never Cry Wolf (1983) and served as second-unit director on films including Sheena (1984) and Out of Africa (1985). He also directed features such as Ring of Bright Water (1969) and Living Free (1972), and contributed a screen story for Cheetah (1989). Couffer died on 30 July 2021 in Costa Mesa, California.
