Jacqueline Andere's stock in trade is composure: the well-dressed woman who gives nothing away and is therefore watched. Buñuel used it once, exactly, in 1962. Mexican television has used it for six decades, and the cinema never quite asked for it again.

In The Exterminating Angel (1962) the dinner guests cannot leave the drawing room and nobody can say why. Andere plays Alicia Roc, one of the faces Buñuel keeps coming back to, and she hardly moves. He told her not to blink and not to look at the camera, and it shows: while the drawing room decays around her she keeps the level, unhurried face of a woman waiting for a car that is late. We found her the hardest guest to read, and so the one we kept checking on, which in a film about people who cannot explain themselves is exactly the right effect. It is a small part and a precise one.
She had come to it from experimental theatre and television teleteatros, with a film debut in El vestido de novia (1959) three years earlier. What followed the Buñuel was not more Buñuel. The popular success was Yesenia (1971), which carried her name a long way beyond Mexico, and the steady work was television: dozens of telenovelas from the 1960s onward, many of them with Ernesto Alonso producing, in which she was repeatedly the elegant, upper-class woman or the villain. La Madrastra (2005), with her as Alba San Román, and Soy tu dueña (2010), as Leonor de Montesinos, are the later ones people know. She was still at it in El Maleficio (2023) and on stage in La velocidad del otoño (2025).
The telenovelas are not a departure from the Buñuel so much as the same thing sold by the yard. A face that lets nothing out makes the audience suspect something, and a producer with two hundred episodes to fill will take that gladly. What the form does not do is leave the face alone; it explains her, weekly, in dialogue. Buñuel did not explain anyone, which is why that one restrained performance is still the thing to point to.
The films in between are patchier, and she is the first to say so. Cinema and television kept separate company in Mexico during her best working years, and the parts did not come. She has put it more bluntly than we would: "Hice películas buenas, algunas muy malas y churros horribles", good films, some very bad ones and some horrible cheap pictures. José María Fernández Unsáin wrote and directed several for her, among them Los enamorados and Las bestias jóvenes, and La casa del pelícano (1978) is the dramatic lead people cite. We have not reviewed it and will not pretend to a view.
What she does needs a director willing to watch a face and not account for it. She met one, early, and then spent sixty years working for people who preferred to account for it. Start with the Buñuel; then, if you want to see what the stillness looks like when someone is paid to make it sinister, try one of the villains.
Biography
Jacqueline Andere is a Mexican actress. She was born María Esperanza Jacqueline Andere Aguilar on 20 August 1938 in Mexico City. She made her film debut in 1959 and appeared as Alicia Roc in Luis Buñuel's The Exterminating Angel (1962).
Andere has worked extensively in telenovelas, including Soy tu dueña (2010) as Leonor de Montesinos and La Madrastra (2005) as Alba San Román. She has also performed in theatre. She was married to the writer and director José María Fernández Unsáin from 1967 until his death in 1997; their daughter Chantal Andere is an actress.
In 2025 she received the Ariel de Oro for her career.
