Biography
Jacques Natanson was a French screenwriter, dialoguist and playwright. Born Jacques Joseph Emmanuel Natansonoff on 15 May 1901 in Asnières-sur-Seine, he began his career in the theatre before adapting one of his plays for the screen in 1929. He worked as a screenwriter and dialoguist on numerous films from the early 1930s onwards, including adaptations and original screenplays for directors such as Marcel L'Herbier, Georg Wilhelm Pabst and Max Ophüls.
Natanson collaborated with Ophüls on La Ronde (1950), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, Le Plaisir (1952) and Lola Montès (1955). He also directed a small number of films in the 1930s and contributed to later television adaptations of his stage work. He died on 19 May 1975 in Le Bugue, Dordogne.
