Biography
Jacques Saulnier was a French production designer and art director. Born in Paris in 1928, he studied architecture before training at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC). He began his career as an assistant art director in the 1950s and made his mark as a chief decorator with Last Year at Marienbad (1961).
Saulnier maintained a long collaboration with director Alain Resnais, designing the sets for films including Muriel, or the Time of Return (1963), Providence (1977), My American Uncle (1980) and Smoking/No Smoking (1993). He also worked on The Sicilian Clan (1969), French Connection II (1975), I... for Icarus (1979) and Swann in Love (1984). He won three César Awards for best production design.
Saulnier died in Paris in 2014.
