Biography
Ján Kadár (also credited as János Kadár) was a Slovak film director and screenwriter. Born in Budapest in 1918, he studied at the Film School in Bratislava and began his career making documentaries and features in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War. He frequently collaborated with Czech director Elmar Klos.
Kadár and Klos directed and wrote several films together, including Death Is Called Engelchen (1963) and The Shop on Main Street (1965). The latter, set during the Nazi occupation of Slovakia, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Kadár emigrated to the United States in 1968 and later worked in film and television in the US and Canada, where his credits include Lies My Father Told Me (1975). He died in Los Angeles in 1979.
