Biography
Jean-Joël Barbier was a French pianist, musicologist and writer who also acted. He played the role of The Priest in Robert Bresson's 1966 film Au Hasard Balthazar and performed the Andantino from Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major for its soundtrack.
Born in Belfort on 25 March 1920, Barbier studied literature and music before the Second World War. He published A Dictionary of French Musicians in 1961 and recorded the complete piano works of Erik Satie. He died in Paris in 1994.
