Biography
Jean-Louis Comolli (30 July 1941 – 19 May 2022) was a French film critic, editor, director and screenwriter. Born in Philippeville (now Skikda), Algeria, he contributed to Cahiers du cinéma from 1962 to 1978 and was editor-in-chief from 1966 to 1971.
He directed fiction films such as Les Deux Marseillaises (1968, co-directed with André S. Labarthe), La Cecilia (1975) and L'Ombre rouge (1981), alongside many documentaries, frequently collaborating with Michel Samson on political subjects set in Marseille. Comolli also wrote on jazz for Jazz Magazine and co-authored books on the topic. He appeared uncredited as Prof. Jeckell in Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville (1965).
