Biography
Jean Narboni is a French film critic, historian and academic. Born on 24 October 1937 in Chlef (then Orléansville), Algeria, he moved to Paris in the early 1960s, where he studied medicine and became a regular at the Cinémathèque française. He began writing for Cahiers du cinéma in 1963 and contributed to its modernist direction under Jacques Rivette.
Narboni has also appeared in a small number of films. He played Roger in Jean-Luc Godard’s 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her (1967) and portrayed a character in the paintings in Raúl Ruiz’s The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting (1978). He has taught film at the University of Paris VIII and at La Fémis, and directed the 1976 film L’Olivier with the Vincennes cinema group.
